VALUES AND ETHOS
Blue Coat CofE Junior School is a welcoming, caring, inclusive environment where our Christian Values are the heart of everything we do and deeply rooted in our vision. As a Church School, we teach 18 core Christian Values over a three year rolling cycle, focusing on one value in depth per half term. We pride ourselves on being a school that practices distinctively Christian values and beliefs whilst embracing diversity, valuing all of God’s children and promoting respect for the beliefs of others and equality for all. Our Christian values are prominently displayed around the school, modelled by all adults and link to our school vision through our excellent provision. Our values and school’s distinctively Christian character inspire Blue Coat children to develop a strong sense of self-worth and the skills and confidence required to live full lives and ensure their future is one “filled with hope and success, not of suffering” (Jeremiah 29:11).
Our Christian Values are…
Trust – Psalm 56:3: When I am afraid, I will trust in you.
Courage – Deuteronomy 31.6: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
Creativity – Genesis 1:31: God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.
Justice – Micah 6.9: What does the Lord require of you? To do justice, love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Forgiveness – Luke 11:14: Forgive us our sins, as we forgive everyone who sins against us.
Peace – Psalm 29-11: The Lord gives strength to his people, the Lord blesses his people with peace.
Humility – Proverbs 11:2: When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
Thankfulness – Luke 22.19: Jesus broke bread and gave thanks.
Compassion – Psalm 145:8-9: The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all: he has compassion on all he has made.
Hope – Psalm 39:7: And so Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.
Friendship John 15.15: ‘I no longer call you servants’, said Jesus………. ‘Instead I have called you friends.’
Generosity – Acts 20:35: Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, it is more blessed to give than to receive.
Respect and Reverence – Matthew 7:12: Do to others as you would have them do to you.
Wisdom – Proverbs 4:5-7: Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Truthfulness – Ephesians 4. 15: Speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the Head that is, Christ.
Perseverance – Hebrews 12.1: Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us that is before us.
Responsibility – Genesis 1:27: God said to human beings, ‘Fill the earth with people and look after it. Care for all that I have made’.
Service – John 13.12-15: After Jesus had washed his disciples’ feet … he said: “Do you understand what I have done? ….. And if your Lord and teacher has washed your feet, you should do the same for each other.”
How do our Christian Values impact Blue Coat Junior lives?
- Our Ethos
We are committed to providing an excellent Church School experience for our children by ensuring our school values and vision are key drivers behind all we do. They shape all policies and procedures to ensure a consistent restorative approach to support that promotes forgiveness, compassion, friendship and a quest for wisdom rooted in mutual respect for all.
- Our Christian Values and the curriculum
Our vision and values are reflected in our creative, broad and balanced curriculum, including Forest School, multicultural days and themed weeks, which engages children to reflect on the person they are and understand how our Christian values can be applied to make the best life choices today. Children learn about wisdom through our ‘big questions’, perseverance and courage through our provision of challenge, creativity when doing Art and DT and friendship, compassion and responsibility through our RE and PSHME curriculum lessons. Collective worship centres around one of our values each half term to embed how we can live out these values and achieve a future filled with hope and success.
- British Values
Adults consistently model our school and British values, demonstrating how they link together to enable harmonious living and support pupils in developing skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain. Collective worship discussions also deepen children’s understanding of how our values of respect and reverence, justice, truth and hope link to the British Values of mutual respect and celebration of diversity.
- Global Awareness
Our values instil a passion for creating a future of success and hope for all. Children at Blue Coat Junior School are very committed to living out our Christian Values through helping others. They demonstrate values of service, responsibility, compassion, generosity, humility and thankfulness in their charity and fundraising work.
- Value Bags
These are 18 bags centred around our 18 Christian values, which the children take in turns to take home. Inside each bag are activities to support prayer and reflection and children’s philosophical development.
