Maths

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Our Mathematics Intent

At Blue Coat (CE) Infant School, we aim to develop confident, fluent and resilient mathematicians who enjoy learning mathematics and understand its importance in everyday life.

We intend for all pupils to:

· Develop a positive attitude towards mathematics, experiencing success and enjoyment in their learning.

· Build secure conceptual understanding through a high-quality curriculum informed by White Rose Maths, NCETM and Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction.

· Become fluent in number facts and calculation methods, enabling them to recall and apply knowledge efficiently and accurately.

· Reason mathematically by explaining their thinking clearly using precise mathematical language.

· Solve problems by breaking them down into manageable steps and persevering to find solutions.

· Take risks in their learning by selecting appropriate strategies and asking themselves: “Can I make it? Can I draw it? Can I do it in my head?”

We are committed to ensuring that all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds, can access and succeed in mathematics through carefully adapted teaching and targeted support.

Through high-quality teaching and an inclusive approach, our mathematics curriculum ensures that all pupils develop the skills, confidence and resilience needed to succeed, enabling them to let their light shine both in mathematics and beyond
